Research

Land rehabilitation; plant nutrition, soil fertility and nutrient cycling; land and catchment management, rehabilitation and restoration of remnant vegetation.

Projects

Land Restoration and Salinity

  1. Revegetation of bauxite residues with native species (with Alcoa)

  2. Using GIS and remote sending to assess impacts on soil productivity of deep open drains in saline and waterlogged landscapes of the WA wheatbelt

  3. Restoration of soil productivity following deep drainage of saline land

  4. Revegetation on iron ore mine sites in the Pilbara (with Rio Tinto)

Soil Fertility

  1. Developing added value composts for optimising the joint application of organic and inorganic fertilisers in south west Australia

  2. Carbon sequestration by saltland pastures on waterlogged and saline soils of the WA wheatbelt (with Dr S. Mann, WA Chemistry Centre)

  3. Soil properties, transport processes and offsite risks of fertiliser use in agricultural landscapes of the south coast, WA (with Dr Mike Wong, CSIRO)

  4. Management of toxicity risk in potatoes from micronutrient fertilisers (with Dr Ian McPharlin, Department of Agriculture)

  5. Deep placement of fertilisers to increase nutrient supply for pulse crops in rainfed and residual moisture regimes

Plant nutrition

  1. Root function and adaption in lowland rainfed rice under fluctuating water regimes

  2. Boron requirements for pulse crops

  3. Effect of chilling temperature on boron response of plants

  4. Uptake and distribution of boron and B supply to the reproductive organs of plants, especially cereals
